Buying guide

SNR (signal-to-noise ratio)

In an automobile amplifier, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which is measured in decibels (dB), compares the amount of audio signal to the level of the noise signal. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of good amplifiers is higher. The SNR, which is measured in decibels (dB), compares the amount of audio signal amplification has to the amount of electrical noise it generates internally. In my experience, amps with excellent sound quality are stated as having an SNR of 90dB or more. Better brands frequently list the SNR with no signal output as well as with 1-watt power output, where it is typically lower. If you set up the gain very high with no music playing in a system with fantastic tweeters and good sound reproduction, it's easy to detect the amp's noise. An amp with good sound quality, on the other hand, will have the least amount and will be more difficult to hear.

Crossover specifications/built-in crossovers

Crossovers (like the ones on the Alpine amp illustrated above) allow you to get more volume out of your speakers while reducing distortion. Small speakers, such as coaxial door speakers and even some higher-priced component speakers, just cannot create the same level of low-end bass like a subwoofer. As a result, when you turn up the level on some of your favorite music, you'll start to hear distortion and the music will start to break up. When using a four-channel amplifier for full-range speaker sound, be sure it has built-in high-pass crossovers. If you want more bass, go for a model with low-pass crossovers.

Design

There's a significant difference in sound between low-cost (low-quality) amps and better-designed automobile amplifiers. One major reason for this is that poorer amps overlook several tiny aspects that are utilized by amps with superior engineering and design.

RMS (Root Mean Square) power rating

Power ratings and sound quality criteria for high-grade amplifiers are now dependable, demonstrated, and published. When looking for a nice sounding amp, look for models that (where possible) show CEA-2006 compliant specifications. This eliminates advertising gimmicks and ensures that power ratings are accurately stated.

For the good sound, use the proper amp wattage.

The reason for this is that when an amplifier is driven above its maximum power output level, the audio signal driving a speaker is clipped, or cut off. Amplifiers with sufficient power will not reach this point since they will still have enough power before producing distortion. The most critical aspect is to have a powerful amplifier that can generate music at the volume you desire without distorting.

You have a choice of options, but you must select the one that provides the optimum sound quality.

Enjoy!
